Histories of Sarragachies Houses

A meeting was held on 6th August 2008 at the Sarragachies Mairie.

The aim was to research the older houses in the Sarragachies Commune.

At the next meeting, on the 21st August, we were shown the commune records held by the Mairie, and how to use them and cross reference them. These ledgers dated back to 1830. No wearing of white gloves for these volumes - they were treated respectfully, but they were books that held information that we all wanted to know.

Some of the volumes were wearing thin. Others had traces of bookworm long dead or flown away, whatever book worms do.

Many of the entries were written in the most beautiful and ornate handwriting.

Moving to Sarragachies

We moved to Sarragachies in December 2006. mortgagefrance.com had afforded its own mortgage.

Sarragachies is in the south west corner of the Gers.

The Gers is in the Midi Pyrenees - department 32

The house is large.

Downstairs there are 2 lounges, a dining room, kitchen, a double bedroom, bathroom, seperate toilet and double garage.

Upstairs there are 4 good sized bedrooms, a bathroom and a very large landing (that's where I work from). It has central heating as well, oil, and boasts rather large cast iron radiators.

It's all a bit scruffy, but the house feels welcoming, warm and friendly.

There are huge beams and support timbers. Some of the timbers have wooden pegs securing them, but there are also steel pegs as well. We had been told that the house, because of the fixing on the support timbers, could be about 150 years old.
